Alocasia Melo
The Alocasia Melo is a true showstopper in the world of rare aroids. Native to the rainforests of Borneo, this compact yet commanding plant is instantly recognisable by its extraordinarily thick, deeply textured leaves — rough to the touch like reptile skin, in a rich, dark blue-green hue. It's a plant that looks like it belongs in a prehistoric jungle.
Unlike many aroids, the Melo stays relatively compact, making it perfect for shelves, desks, or terrariums where its sculptural leaves can be admired up close. Each new leaf is an event — slowly unfurling to reveal that iconic rugged texture that collectors obsess over.
Care Guide
- Light: Bright indirect light; avoid direct sun which can bleach the leaves
- Water: Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry between waterings; do not overwater
- Humidity: Prefers 60–80% humidity; use a humidifier or pebble tray
- Temperature: Ideal range 18–28°C; keep away from cold drafts
- Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix (perlite, orchid bark, coco coir)
- Fertiliser: Balanced liquid fertiliser fortnightly during the growing season
